Contrast:  When Kalman's thoughts are expressed a different font is used. This provides the reader insight into the mindset of the illustrator as well. The audience sees that she is on board with Pollan's ideas and she creates a tone of humor that appeals to the playful nature of the book. Also, I think she builds some repore with the audience in the introduction by saying that "cheesedoodles will always have a special place in my family history." This is then accompanied by a cheededoddle painting. Another contrast is the difference if font between the paragraphs and the rules. The rules are seperated and diferentiated. This was a tactic used to get readers to read and pick up more rules than they might normally. The book is designed in a way that the reader could just skim through the rules listed and not read any of the paragraphs of explainations. A ploy to get to more readers in the long run.

Repetition: The repition of the word fact in the introduction emphasizes Pollan's thesis. The facts about western illness and fake food goes directly into Pollan stating that "culture has more to say about healthy eating than science or coporations.

Alignment: Paintings are aligned consistantly with their coresponding assertion, creating a smooth flow within the book layout. This contributes to helping the reader understand some of the rules presented. To see them in a visual form helps clarity as well as provides some additional material within the painting that make the reader think that might not be in the text. An example is the picture that is labeled extrudo sauce.
